چکیده

Accurate infrared (IR) spectroscopy of protonated water clusters prepared in the gas phase has become possible in recent years,[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] opening the door to a deeper understanding of the properties of aqueous systems and the hydrated proton, which are of main interest in central areas of chemistry and biology. Several computational studies have appeared in parallel, providing a necessary theoretical basis for the assignment and understanding of the different spectral features.[7, 8, 9, 6, 10] It has been recently demonstrated that the H5O + 2 motif, also referred to as Zundel cation, plays an important role in protonated water clusters of 6 or more water molecules and as a limiting structure, together with the Eigen cation (H9O + 4 ), of the hydrated

A 'clusters-in-liquid' method for calculating infrared spectra identifies the proton-transfer mode in acidic aqueous solutions.

In liquid water the transfer of an excess proton between two water molecules occurs through the Zundel cation, H(2)O···H(+)···OH(2). The proton-transfer mode is the asymmetric stretch of the central O···H(+)···O moiety, but there is no consensus on its identification in the infrared spectra of acidic aqueous solutions. Also, in experiments with protonated gas-phase water clusters, its position ...

Full dimensional (15 dimensional) quantum-dynamical simulation of the protonated water-dimer IV: isotope effects in the infrared spectra of D(D2O)2(+), H(D2O)2(+), and D(H2O)2(+) isotopologues.

The infrared spectra of H(H(2)O)(2)(+), D(D(2)O)(2)(+), H(D(2)O)(2)(+), and D(H(2)O)(2)(+) isotopologues of the Zundel cation in the spectral range of 0-4000 cm(-1) are computed by quantum dynamics in full dimensionality using the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method. The spectra present dramatic isotope effects in the middle spectral region between 600 and 2000 cm(-1). Not only the...

How does a membrane protein achieve a vectorial proton transfer via water molecules?

We present a detailed mechanism for the proton transfer from a protein-bound protonated water cluster to the bulk water directed by protein side chains in the membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin. We use a combined approach of time-resolved Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and X-ray structure analysis to elucidate the functional role of a hydrogen bond betw...

Full Dimensional (15D) Quantum-Dynamical Simulation of the Protonated Water-Dimer II: Infrared Spectrum and Vibrational Dynamics

The infrared absorption spectrum of the protonated water dimer (H5O + 2 ) is simulated in full dimensionality (15D) in the spectral range 0–4000 cm−1. The calculations are performed using the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method for propagation of wavepackets. All the fundamentals and several overtones of the vibrational motion are computed. The spectrum of H5O + 2 is shaped...

Chirality recognition of the protonated serine dimer and octamer by infrared multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy.

Infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy has been used to record IR signatures of chirality recognition in the protonated serine dimer and octamer in the 3200-3800 cm(-1) region. This is the first IRMPD study to investigate the heterochiral biomolecular system by utilizing the isotope-labelled species. Noticeable differences in the homo- versus heterochiral IRMPD spectra have been...
